Bidaai in Indian Weddings – All about the Rituals
Weddings are a whirlwind of love, laughter, and emotions, starting with lively pre-wedding rituals like Haldi, Mehendi, Sangeet, Chooda-Kaleerey, Joota-Chupai, and Varmala, and culminating in the main wedding ceremony. Among all these celebrations, the most emotional moment is undoubtedly the Bidaai—the bride’s farewell from her parental home. It’s a bittersweet ritual where relatives bless the couple as she begins a new chapter of life with her husband, and parents struggle to hold back tears as they let go of their child.

Bidaai is rich in symbolism. Before leaving, the bride throws rice and coins backward into her home, wishing for her parents’ prosperity and expressing gratitude for their love and care. No matter the distance to her in-laws’ house, almost every bride sheds tears, feeling the weight of leaving her family behind. Yet, amidst the sadness, Bidaai also marks a joyous beginning—the start of the couple’s journey together as husband and wife, ready to share life’s every happy, challenging, and hilarious moment as partners.
